NorthLink Ferries are committed to playing an active part within the local communities. The variety of individuals and causes supported continue to enrich the islands’ social, cultural and sporting life.
The rationale for the sponsored travel scheme was simple. It took account of the fact that, over and above the regular Islander discount schemes, there would be occasions when Orcadians and Shetlanders – perhaps when they were representing their island – would be required to make regular southbound journeys as they competed in UK and Scottish mainland competitions or, even, Scottish mainland sporting leagues.
Five years since the NorthLink Ferries sponsorship programme was first introduced, the number of people who have benefited now totals 20,415 and the value of the sponsorship – which also includes free and discounted travel for some 3880 vehicles – now stands at a massive £710,576.
Each year the sponsorship packages – which can also include travel vouchers for clubs, charities and organisations to use as fund-raising raffle prizes – cover the periods April – September and October – March. As each tranche becomes available the response is huge and the advice from the company is to get your application in early.
